What is pruning and trimming?

Tree pruning and trimming are synonymous work practices. Pruning being the older practice of tree maintenance, in general: cancelling and cutting back dead, diseased, weak, interfering branches, pruning trees into ball shapes, reducing the crown by cutting off the tree’s head (topping), reducing the crown to the height of the primary branches or of the trunk of the tree considered to be a nuisance (restoration), and so on.

Trimming, on the other hand, involves performing the same tasks, with the exception of topping, restoration, and ball pruning. As for the rest, the tree trimmer, commonly known as the pruner, arborist, climber or fitter, will carry out all pruning work in the same way as the pruner, i.e. climbing the tree to cancel and cut off dead, diseased, weak or interfering branches. He may cut branches or trunks to rebalance the structure of the tree, trim the ends of branches to clear wires, the house, the pool or any other request you may have.

The tree pruner will also be able to carry out other work for you, such as thinning your tree, raising the crown (branches that are too low), etc. Tree pruning should be carried out on average every 3 to 5 years, depending on the maturity of your tree. The younger and more vigorous the tree, the closer it will need to be cared for, such as formation and directional pruning. Under normal circumstances, tree pruning and trimming are always carried out with the aim of giving your trees a healthy, long-term life so that they develop properly throughout their lives.

In this way, your tree will be well-structured and solid, while meeting the appropriate clearances for your safety and that of your loved ones, as well as your material goods.

Why prune or trim a tree?

There are several reasons for pruning or trimming trees:

  • Sick Tree
  • Infected Tree
  • Unhealthy Tree
  • Infrastructure Clearance
  • Keeping Branches Healthy and Strong
  • Aesthetics

Generally, we prune a tree because its branches rub against each other, causing wounds that can become a breeding ground for insects, fungi, and diseases. When branches are weakened, they can easily break and fall on your house, shed, electrical wires or, even worse, on someone. That’s why it’s important to have your tree pruned before it’s too late.

The Benefits of Pruning
  • Pruning reduces the length and number of unnecessary or harmful branches.
  • Pruning can be used to direct or limit the tree’s development.
  • Pruning prevents the tree from blocking natural light.
  • Pruning increases tree life expectancy and vitality.
  • Pruning allows the tree to better resist disease and drought.
